klaske56@hotmail.com als je meer wilt. The film ‘Trnova koruna z papelicek’ (a dandalion crown), by Klaas Rusticus in 1993, contains a message which is the ideal message for the Christian feast of Eastern.
It shows us in a throw of images how it feels to become the new man that Jesus wants to make of us.
In the beginning we see a peaceful village in the hills of Slovakia, where boys and girl are playing their games with the joy of their youth. Then a young girl, who picks flowers in the meadows shows us how Persephone, the joyful daughter of Diana, gives us the pleasure of a rich harvest. Gratefully she picks up the flowers of creativity.
But to become a new person, or to introduce a new paradigm in the world, causes also pain, even when you want to predict love instead of anxiousness.
We see the cross Jesus hang on. Its feet stands on earth but shows us the way to haven. The horizontal board seems to be a symbol of the arms of the loving Parent who reaches out to the whole earth to show his love.
Rusticus takes off the horizontal board en places it next to the other board. Now two boards stand upright to show us how we can reach haven while we are on earth.
At the left board the girl is bound with ropes, on the right board a boy is bound in the same way.
The old people of the village in their black clothes come to see how the children (the new feelings – the girl – and the new ideas – the boy) are tortured. Sometimes they close their eyes, as they don’t want to see how good en beautiful the young ones are; sometimes they look angry, because they don’t want to change their lives to make themselves feel better. Of course we see in the villagers also our own old feeling of anxiousness to change.
First the executioner hits the children with a flashing sound. After a while we don’t hear the sound any more. The boy and the girl are being hit, but it is like they don’t really feel the pain any more, like we don’t hear the sound.
Then again the film shows us the children in the village, now going home, because the night will come soon. The games the play are not as joyful as in the beginning of the film. The children are tired of playing.
The film ends by showing us how on Golgotha the three crosses, on which Jesus hang with the murderers beside him, burn with a intense fire.
A cross can have the meaning of a situation in life that is not easy to overcome. The ‘3’ means creativity.
This is for Rusticus the meaning of Eastern: by creativity you can overcome even your most painful pain. By doing so, you can help others to overcome their pain, like Jesus did with his life. The fire is the passion you need to overcome, the passion you need to find your own way home.
The credit titles show us Persephone again. She promises us that their will always be a way out of Hades, the unconsciousness that does not care for life and happiness. It will always be spring again.
It will always be Eastern again. We only have to leave our lives of living like a dead man. We only have to be alive.
Rusticus made this film with no words. That really doesn’t mean he has nothing to say.www.klaskehiemstra.nl
